Orbital Welding Project History:

  • Ballance Agri Nutrient NZ 2021: During COVID-19, MechPro Solutions worked remotely with the Ballance Agri Nutrients site team to create and develop weld procedures for their work on the reformer pigtails Inco 800h butt welds. This included remote training of their operators on the operation of the AMI orbital welding machines. Quality of work was achieved through our input and collaboration with Balance.
  • Methanex NZ 2023: MechPro Solutions undertook a significant scope to replace 680 pigtails on the MOT 2 Reformer. MechPro Solutions developed all weld procedures in collaboration with the Methanex integrity team. The scope was further increased with discovery of cracking in their Bull T’s therefor requiring Mechpro Solutions to develop further a repair procedure for the orbital welding of the Bull T’s, A significant part of this scope was to create a weld prep that would support the integrity and certainty of the welding required for repair, this required specialised and custom tooling to be developed for the excavation of the defects.
  • Ballance Agri Nutrients NZ 2024: MechPro Solutions undertook a similar scope to the above with the replacement of 32 pigtails on the Primary Reformer, MechPro Solutions was engaged early to work alongside Balance’s integrity team on the R&D of the welding process of Inco 800H to achieve optimal hardness and limited stress to the already aged material. Overall, very successful.

Machining/Weld Preparation

MechPro Solution has developed through R&D, trials of machining preps for specific applications for the orbital welding processes to ensure precise fits and alignments. Here are some key ways in which machining contributes to orbital welding:

  1. Preparation of Components: Machining, fabricating, or preparing components to be welded. This involves shaping, cutting, drilling, and milling materials to the required specifications, ensuring they fit together correctly during welding.
  2. Surface Preparation: Proper surface preparation is crucial for achieving high-quality welds. Machining is often employed to clean and smooth off surfaces, remove any contaminants or oxides, and ensure optimal weld penetration and adhesion.
  3. Tolerances and Fit-Up: Machining ensures tight tolerances and accurate fit-up of components before welding. This is essential for maintaining weld integrity and preventing defects such as gaps or misalignments, which can compromise the strength and integrity of the weld joint.
  4. Customisation and Modification: Machining allows for customising and modifying weld preps for specific welding applications. This may involve creating special fixtures, adapters, or tooling to facilitate the orbital welding and accommodate unique geometries or requirements.
  5. Repair and Maintenance: Machining is also used to repair or modify welded components, addressing any defects, distortions, or damage that may occur during welding or subsequent use. This ensures the longevity and reliability of welded structures and equipment.

Mechpro Solutions has developed a series of weld preps for different applications and processes, which have formed part of the R&D for weld integrity and conformance
